Jivamukti Yoga

Jivamukti Yoga

A vigorous, intellectually stimulating vinyasa-based practice that integrates spiritual teachings, chanting, meditation, music, and deep study of the yogic scriptures.

What Is Jivamukti Yoga?

Jivamukti Yoga is a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings. Founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1984 in New York City, Jivamukti is one of the most influential modern yoga methods. It combines a physically demanding vinyasa practice with scriptural study, Sanskrit chanting, devotional music, meditation, and ethical vegetarianism.

The word Jivamukti means "liberation while living" — the idea that spiritual awakening is not something that happens after death, but something we can experience here and now, in this body, in this life.

"Jivamukti is a practice of returning to our deepest nature — one that is inherently joyful, peaceful, and free."

— Sharon Gannon

The Five Tenets of Jivamukti Yoga

Every Jivamukti class is built around five core principles that distinguish it from other styles of yoga:

1
Ahimsa (Non-Violence)

A compassionate lifestyle, including ethical vegetarianism — extending kindness to animals, the planet, and ourselves.

2
Bhakti (Devotion)

Recognising that the Divine resides in all beings and expressing devotion through practice and daily life.

3
Dhyana (Meditation)

Cultivating stillness and witnessing the mind — the heart of the Jivamukti practice.

4
Nada (Sound)

Using Sanskrit chanting and uplifting music to refine the mind and open the heart.

5
Shastra (Scripture)

Studying ancient yogic texts — including the Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita, and Upanishads — as guides for modern life.

What to Expect in a Class

A typical Jivamukti class begins with chanting, sets a monthly theme drawn from yogic scripture, and moves through a creative, flowing vinyasa sequence set to inspiring music. Each class includes pranayama (breathwork), a meditation, and a short teaching that links the physical practice to spiritual philosophy. You'll leave feeling physically worked, mentally clear, and deeply inspired.

The class is open to all levels — options are always given so that beginners and experienced practitioners can share the same space and each get what they need.
