What if you could combine the mindfulness of yoga, the power of martial arts, and the primal fluidity of animal movement into a single practice? That's Budokon — a modern mixed-movement art that challenges every convention about what a yoga class should look like.
What Makes Budokon Different
Budokon (Japanese for "way of the warrior spirit") was founded by Cameron Shayne and draws from yoga, martial arts, calisthenics, and animal locomotion. Unlike traditional yoga, which tends to move linearly through postures, Budokon explores circular, spiralling movements. You'll crawl like a panther, transition through martial stances, and flow through yoga sequences — all in one class.
"Movement is not just exercise — it's a conversation between your body and the world."
— Budokon philosophy
The Three Pillars
Yoga: The foundation — conscious movement linked with breath. Budokon uses a unique vinyasa sequence that builds heat and challenges coordination in ways traditional yoga often doesn't.
Martial Arts: Drawing from karate, taekwondo, and jiu-jitsu, the striking patterns teach precision, power, and control. You learn to move your body through space with intention.
Animal Locomotion: Crawling, hopping, and rolling across the floor the way animals do builds functional strength, mobility, and body awareness. These primal patterns wake up parts of your body that conventional exercise ignores.
Why You Should Try It
Budokon builds a different kind of fitness. It's not just about looking strong — it's about being capable, adaptable, and connected to your body. After a few classes, you'll notice improvements in your balance, coordination, and the way you move through everyday life. And for yogis, it brings a fresh challenge that deepens your understanding of movement.
My Thursday evening Budokon classes at CityRock Johannesburg are a highlight of the week. The community that's formed around this practice is something special — people who want to play, explore, and push beyond their perceived limits.
Curious? Join us for Budokon on Thursdays at 17:30 at CityRock Johannesburg. All levels welcome — come ready to move.
